The Taunting gives sound reasoning to the phrase “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” When looking at the cover of The Taunting I immediately thought I would be investing in a night-light before the Wal-Mart closed. It features a promisingly spooky woman who is very reminiscent of the stock character of a dead woman we would see in Japanese horror. And I do have to admit when this character was first shown it gave me a little start and more than once she was creepy enough, but in the end, this is a porno, not The Grudge.

The film starts out following a couple that meet up at a cemetery, seemingly with the intention of exploring a haunted house of some sort. In the cemetery the ghost somehow latches on to them and this spirit follows them throughout the house. As the couple and ghost make their way through the house we come upon four separate sex scenes. As these progress not only does the ghost become more involved with the beings that are involved in the sex scenes, but it becomes more involved with the couple. In the fourth scene the ghost pushes the man, who is part of the couple, into the scene. After this the ghost becomes less active and for some reason isn’t involved in the fifth or sixth scenes at all. At the end of the film the couple have returned to the cemetery and one of the actors in the house confronts them and has her way with both the man and woman. The scenes are very loosely attached; the connecting threads are that they take place in the same house and the couple at least watch, or in the case of scenes four and six, participate in it.

Where The Taunting does excel is in its artsy quality. The crew played with lighting, camera angles and clearly put thought into both the set and the costumes, especially when it came to bondage. In The Taunting, the lighting represented different viewpoints; when they focused on the ghost the film was black and white and slightly grainy. When the couple was walking to a room they were bathed in green light. When the ghost was touching the couple, the scene was very much fuchsia. The actual sex scenes didn’t have any special lighting, with exclusion to the points when the ghost was playing with the participants. The sets were very distinct, so much so that the credits list characters based on rooms, such as “the red room dom.” You could easily tell when they wanted the room to be a bathroom or a living room type space. The cemetery, used in the first and last scene, was very believable. It had tombstones, a raised grave and even a fog machine. The crew enjoyed showing off their ability to make pretty knots in the first two scenes, as there were cast members who served no purpose but to display the ropes that tied them.

The lighting definitely helped the filming; the lighting gave added dimension to the scenes, allowing the audience to realize that they were filming three separate levels of existence and that these parallel worlds are somehow interacting. Until the final scene those taking part in the sex scenes and the ghost are separate from the couple. The ghost is able to interact with everyone and the sex scene actors are oblivious to anyone outside their scene.

Even though this isn’t the type of porno I was expecting, the sex was still great. The Taunting had wonderfully artsy aspects and they played with the camera and the lighting. They didn’t move the camera around just so you can see as much penetration as possible either; it was actually working on giving different angles than you’re usually given. The scenes are all tied together, albeit loosely, but they are still together. The BDSM level is fun, more along the levels of messing around in the bed yourself not the professional mistress level. Just remember you won’t be getting a film with lots o’ sex if you watch The Taunting, rather you’ll get sex scenes that are softly tied together and leave you wanting to be tied up a little yourself.
